Tyqua, the funny Wijk bij Duurstede curly retriever
Meet Tyqua, the hilariously stubborn curly retriever of Wijk bij Duurstede, whose stick obsession, cat-chasing antics, and biscuit rituals made her the heart of our two-week stay with Opi and Nana. From forest walks to dishwasher duties, every moment with her was pure joy and unforgettable mischief.
Food, Family and my Dutch heritage
Staying with my Dutch grandparents, Opi and Nana, felt like a welcome slice of home after nine months of travel, filled with warm meals, old photo albums, and daily walks with the dog that were perfect for bonding. Our time there was a blend of comfort and Dutch culture, from learning to make apple compote with Nana to cycling to a local farm and exploring historical sites on Monument Day.
Everyone and everything is on a detour
Despite being on a plane for 2.5 hours our flight never took off, our original flight got cancelled due to a distant storm. Meanwhile the airline's AI had an interesting re-routing plan that involved the UK, a country we, as Australians, could not enter without a visa. After some human intervention and a creative reroute, we finally made it to Amsterdam via an unexpected stopover in Philadelphia, only to discover our bags had taken their own separate holiday to Nashville. This blog is the start of SQAD’s European adventures.
Between Storms and Snorkels
Travel isn't always easy, and Guadeloupe taught us just how true that is, but we always look for the silver linings amidst the chaos. Come along for a look at the good parts of our trip, where we got chased for forgotten pizza, swam in cyclone-churned waters, and ended up glowing after a full-body sulphur mud bath.
Health Scare on the Island
An unexpected health scare cut our trip to Guadeloupe short, with us seeking faster and more comprehensive diagnostic care in Miami. This challenging experience brought into sharp focus the vast difference in healthcare accessibility we have, compared to the local people of Guadeloupe.
Guadeloupe, and taking a shower or not
After a three-hour flight from Miami, our French language adventure in Guadeloupe was immediately challenged by a severe and unpredictable lack of running water due to local infrastructure problems. This forced us to rely on a large stock of stored water bottles for daily survival, as the tap water was off for more than three-quarters of our planned stay.
Alligators and top golf in Miami
Skimming across the Everglades in an airboat, we came face-to-face with a fiercely protective mama alligator protecting her nest, which she signaled with a clear hiss as she came close to our boat. The raw encounter with Florida’s wild heart was unforgettable.
Take me out to the ball game
Until recently, I’d never watched a baseball game, but on a scorching day in Miami, we found ourselves at a stadium cheering for the Marlins as they beat the Astros. Between popcorn breaks and a near-miss with strict entry rules, I discovered the charm and history of the iconic seventh-inning-stretch song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Join me as I share this American sporting experience.
The Great Timeshare Escape
Join me on a different kind of expedition—one that didn't take us across oceans but into the surprisingly complex world of 'well-marketed holiday offerings.' What we thought was a simple facilities tour turned into an unexpected lesson in high-pressure marketing and the art of the timeshare pitch. Find out how we navigated this tricky terrain and, most importantly, why we ultimately decided to walk away.
Space shuttle program
Join me in the Space Shuttle Atlantis building where I learned about the program and how they had five space shuttles: the Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. It is an amazing feat for humanity as this program is an integral part of both past and future space exploration.
NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre
We started our second NASA day early, packed up the car, and headed straight for Kennedy Space Center. From the dramatic Atlantis shuttle reveal to hearing astronaut Norman Thagard speak, exploring launch pads, and seeing the massive Saturn V rocket up close. NASA left us feeling inspired and amazed.
Crewed rocket launch at NASA
Feel the thunderous roar of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with four astronauts onboard, rise from the launchpad at Cape Canaveral, carrying this fragile human cargo into outer space – their destination: the International Space Station moving at 28,000 km/h in low-earth orbit! Between immersive rides, astronaut tributes, and the ground-shaking blast of liftoff, NASA left us inspired by the sheer scale of human ingenuity.
Cape Canaveral
We set out before sunrise chasing a rocket, only to end up standing in a horrible motel and recovering from a disastrous iHop lunch. But with a little luck, a lot of Wi-Fi, and some travel wizardry, we found ourselves in a cozy cabin in Titusville.
First time in Miami
Join us as we discover Miami, adjust to a new country, and its people. We have a look at Ocean Drive, walk through Lincoln Road Mall, and watch rockets launch.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
The Monteverde Cloud Forest greeted us with a misty and windy atmosphere. We met some new friends and get to experience seeing hummingbirds a wild toucan.
Bioluminescence at our fingertips - Kayaking
Our kayaks carved through liquid starlight, each paddle stroke igniting a galaxy beneath us. From the longevity secrets of Nicoya to the surreal glow of Paquera’s plankton-rich gulf, this experience was a breathtaking blend of nature, science, and wonder.
The adventure continues
From scorpion standoffs to chasing stolen AirPods through the jungle, Costa Rica reminded us that adventure isn’t just about the postcard moments—it’s about rolling with the chaos and laughing through the unexpected. Because no matter what goes wrong, we always say, “the adventure continues.”
Canyoning Costa Rica
Dangling from waterfalls, zip-lining into jungle pools, and rappelling through misty rainforest cliffs — our canyoning adventure with Maquique Adventure in La Fortuna was nothing short of wild. I took the reins as trip organiser and found a company that delivered amazing value, heart-pounding thrills, and an unforgettable Costa Rican lunch. From my first shaky descent into a 20-metre drop to the final plunge beside a 60-metre waterfall, this was hands down one of the top highlights of our world trip.
La Fortuna and a Sloth tour. 🦥🦥🦥
Sloths are such a fascinating animal. People think they are lazy, but they have an important role to play in their eco systems. While in Costa Rica we went on a sloth tour and got a chance to see them in the wild. I learned so much from this tour as well as doing some of my own research. I share what I have learned from this whole experience as well as some extra things we got up to in La Fortuna.
Costa Rica, a new chapter.
A new chapter opens as we head to the next country on our world trip itinerary. Many adventures await in the small Central American country of Costa Rica.
