What is the Aussie FI Community – Online & Free?

Aussie FI Community (Online) is an online daughter and mother peer-run community of people interested in FI (Financial Independence) who meet on Zoom on the first Sunday of each month at 10 AM (Sydney time) to talk all things FI. The idea was centred around the fact that some people don’t have access to a local FI group and a sense of community, such as people who live in rural Australian areas. The journey to FI can feel lonely
(and even boring once you set up your system) because very few people dive into their finances and think about money in this way. The beauty of having it online is that you can be anywhere in Australia or anywhere in the world, and you can be connected with like-minded people.

As part of my Year 12 social action project and my research on this topic, I noticed a gap: most FI groups weren't running regular online meet-ups, so I started monthly Zoom sessions. It's completely free, so that anyone can join, discuss, think, and learn from each other.

This way, people still get to see familiar faces, be part of a community of like-minded people, and speak about all things FI on a regular basis. Topics we will explore include things such as the mindset around money and how to live a good life on the way to FI or once you have reached FI, which looks different for everyone.

If you are interested in Financial Independence, we would love to have you join us soon!

Reflection on the first session

04/10/26

So the first session of the Aussie FI Community actually went pretty well. We got three highly engaged people in the session, which is great for the first one (on the day of Daylight Saving), having only had two weeks of promotions as we were debating when to start.

I only had a short timeline to share what we were doing with the FI community, create the poster, and create the Facebook group. Although only 3 people showed up for the first Zoom session, I did manage to get 15 people to join the Facebook group, and every day, the numbers seem to keep growing, so I have very high hopes for next month. I think it can only get better from here.

For the first session, my mum took the lead, but now I have lots of ideas for topics we can talk about and of course I will be led by the community regarding topics of interest as well. I'm not trying to be an expert or someone who has all the answers, I will just the facilitator of these Zoom sessions.

In this first session, we spoke about the books we had read and found really insightful in some way about the way we think about or view money. As of writing this, I have not read or listened to all these books and podcasts, but I do think it's important to share some of the suggestions that we spoke about in the session.
